Her Secret was composed in response to Georges Seurat’s masterpiece A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. In the very center of this painting there is a young girl holding her mother’s hand, not so willingly, as I imagined. She wears her formal Sunday clothes and is expressionless, as is the rest of the crowd. However, she stares directly at the viewer, while almost everyone else’s attention is focused on the water. I wondered what she might be thinking, and imagined her desperately wanting to dance around the park, jump in the water, and make as much noise as possible. Her mother’s grip is tight though, so she remains at her side. Her thoughts however, are unrestrained.
